PERCEPTIONS OF SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES OPERATORS TOWARDS THE IMPORTANCE OF INSURANCE: A CASE STUDY

Objective of study is to determine perceptions of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) owners/operators towards the importance of insurance. Primary data which include perceptions towards the importance of insurance were collected from a number of small and medium enterprises owners/operators within the District of Bantul, Yogyakarta who were randomly selected as respondents. Descriptive-qualitative analysis was performed in this study. The study results showed that SMEs operators understand that insurance is required in overcoming associated business risk. However, their knowledge regarding insurance has been lacking which is indicated by the rate of use of insurance service within SMEs owners/operators which was considerably low (except for those whose businesses were export oriented). Another finding which is interesting was that SMEs owners/operators consider insurance as a source of significant additional cost of production.
